Project

Rural small scale farmers in Eastern Kenya are highly exploited by middle men who buy their products at very low prices and resell the same products double the price in the market place. This is because the farmers have no real time knowledge of the actual market price despite each farmer having access to a mobile phone. We intend to use technology to bring these farmers to the main buyers using an SMS system to ensure that they are able to sell profitably in a beneficial way.

    Location

    Kitui County, Kenya

      Description

Eastern Kenya is considered a semi arid section of Kenya, yet its the only region in Kenya where green grams and pigein peas are grown in kenya. These two commodities are mainly exported to India and Russia. The farmers in these region are constantly poor to even receive food aid from the government of Kenya. Our organisation Human Development International (HDI) is already training and supporting these farmers on better plant management methods, harvesting and post harvesting technologies that can improve their livelihoods and change their living standars. HDI therefore is seeking to launch a plat form that will link the farmers directly with the wholesale/bulk buyers who are involved with direct exports.

Through this the project intends to cut out the middle men and allow the farmers to access the buyers direclty by receiving relevant up to date and realtime market information.

HDI will establish purchasing contracts with the bulk buyers and create an SMS platform through which each buyer can know the quantities and locations for each produce and access the produce directly at a better negotiated market rate.

      Risks and Challenges

    1. All information will be relayed in real time , 2 times daily through an automated SMS system. 2. All participating farmers must register through an online mobile money system that will allow them to receive confirmation SMS. 3.No cash transaction will be made at any time, all payments are transmitted through mobile cash systems and farmers are able to access their money on their phones real time
